Picnic Day 2012!

This year's Picnic Day festivities promised to look much different than in years past because organized sports and a replaced ACL entered the picture. Still, as much as we love the parade, and as fun as it can be (depending on rain/heat/baby factors) to putz around on campus, we mostly love Picnic Day for the excuse to gather with friends, new and old. Seriously. We LOVE people. So come visit, and you don't have to wait until April 2013!

On Friday night we had guest appearances from old (but younger than us) friends. Kelly Stephens and her fellow coach, Jason, stopped through Davis on their way to a big volleyball tournament in Reno; Kelly also brought a huge delivery of tasty morsels from a Visalia bakery. She slightly overlapped with Chris Sullivan, who stayed for dinner and good conversation before he headed off to meet up with other friends. It was great to catch up with them both!

On Saturday morning we had fairly low expectations but pulled off a decent amount. The soccer game went as usual: Siena exiting the field multiple times each quarter to say, in response to my hushed threats to get back on the field or she won't get the post-game snack, "You're silly, Mom." Or more often, "But I'm tiiiiired." Most of her teammates had similar behavior, though I think their parents were a little nicer. Coach Jeremiah suggested calling the game a little early since the other team was down to only two players and a small chorus of "Hurrah!" could be heard from the sidelines.

Nothin' but love for Coach Jeremiah

The beginning of the end...

We were getting back to Davis by about 11:00 so we swung by and picked up Aunt Sarah and zoomed downtown to hunt for parking. Shiloh, despite his lawful profession, likes to "bend" as many rules as possible. With imploring shakes of his crutches, he got the cone-guard to let us park on closed-off C Street. Right in front of Burgers and Brew and, yes, right next to the parade spot we always sit in. Score!

We entertained thoughts of the petting zoo, but after driving by it and seeing the snaking lines, we opted for nap time instead. Good choice. Sleeping through the heat of the day rejuvenated us for a fun BBQ at the park near our house with many more good friends! P.S. Shiloh was driving. Six days after surgery. Seven weeks before the doctor advised. See? Rule bender

And some kickball to end the evening on a good note.  There's nothing sweeter than pegging young kids with soccer balls. (?) I am so thankful for all the people God has put into our lives. And if you didn't make it to Picnic Day this year, put it on the calendar for 2013!
